week before her 107th birthday in 1998,
Eva began receiving cards, letters, gifts and flowers. Eventually, more than 120
birthday cards arrived, including one from all 50
states. Her story had been posted on the
Internet! Eva didn't fully understand how the
Internet works, but then, who does? She was
thrilled to receive so many cards, each one a
little ray of sunshine. In the above
picture, she is wearing her favorite sweater,
which she called her "George
Washington" sweater because it has cherries
embroidered on it. Eva was intensely patriotic
and loved stories about the great presidents. Her
favorite of all the birthday cards she received
was a postcard of Mount Rushmore. Every morning
she propped it up behind her plate while she ate
breakfast.
However, when she got a letter of
congratulations from President Clinton, she taped
it on the wall of the bathroom. Over the toilet.
Her 108th birthday in 1999 brought more than
200 cards from well-wishers from around the world
including elected officials and four govenors.
Her party was celebrated by loved ones, far flung
friends who dropped by, and reporters.
